I became a graduate after completing Griffith University’s Bachelor of Laws (hons) and Criminology and Criminal Justice degree mid-2020. At the time I was also undertaking a part-time cadetship with Queensland Treasury through the Student Employment team, in which I met some of the most incredible and inspiring people who were fundamental to my decision to pursue a graduate role within government.

In early 2021, that pursuit saw me moving down to the Australian Capital Territory to commence a graduate role with the Attorney-General’s Department which is also sponsoring me through the College of Law’s Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, after which I will be admitted as a lawyer.

While challenging, being a graduate has been the most rewarding and valuable experience so far in my career. Not only have I been exposed to some incredibly interesting areas of policy, law and government; I have also been greatly supported in growing as a professional alongside very experienced colleagues who are all from quite diverse backgrounds, including my fellow graduate cohort of which many have fast become close friends. It has been a great experience, one that most certainly has made all those hours studying well worth the time and effort.

For those who are thinking of travelling down the same or similar pathway, my strongest recommendation to you is to always try to embrace new challenges and opportunities with the mindset that from each experience, whether good or bad, it is guaranteed that you will come out the end of it knowing far more than you did before and an even better sense of where you want to go next.
